Facilities Managers Development Group

October 9, 2008

ICTAS- Corporate Research Center

Meeting Opened By: Dawn Maxey

Guest Speaker: Bob Schwabik – Virginia’s Philpott Manufacturing Extension Partnership (VPMEP)

Business Discussed:

Bob Schwabik with Virginia’s Philpott Manufacturing Extension Partnership at Virginia Tech discussed Total Productive Maintenance. The Total Productive Maintenance plan is a LEAN methodology that uses simple processes and tools to measure equipment productivity. While primarily applied to production machinery, the methodology can also be used for any equipment with the intent of increasing equipment availability. Bob’s presentation demonstrated the concepts and showed examples that could be applied to electrical and mechanical equipment on campus.

A copy of Bob’s presentation will be posted on the FMDG website for further information.

Lylah also asked the members to start making a list of equipment that each of us handles, that would be common among the group. Once these lists are compiled, the group can seek information from the University to try and get contracts from service vendors that would cover similar equipment on one contract.  This could reduce costs for each department and lessen the burden on the Purchasing department.
